We can’t tell you how hard it rocks that Robert Eggers is now synonymous with “Christmas release.” How could he not be after Nosferatu made a mint at the box office? Seriously, the guy put Count Orlok up against a Sonic the Hedgehog sequel and a Barry Jenkins Lion King prequel and held his own. A Christmas fucking Miracle, indeed, and we’re hoping that his latest, Werwulf, is more of the same.
Hell, it’s got a lot of the same cast: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily Rose-Depp, and, of course, the inimitable Willem Dafoe. Many have tried; few will ever actually get there. Could you imagine staying that stylish for forty years? We can’t, and trust us, we want to. Anyway, this is Eggers’ take on lycanthropy, which is a fancy word for “guy who turns into a wolf better than Christopher Abbott did when Blumhouse tried it.” And, based on this trailer that Focus dropped earlier on Monday, we’re incredibly excited.
Peep it:
Here’s an exceptionally brief synopsis:
“Witness Robert Eggers’ most visceral and haunting experience yet. Focus Features presents ‘Werwulf,’ a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation and the devil within.
Werwulf will hit theaters at Christmastime, where it’ll go up against the one-two punch of Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part III. This, obviously, isn’t going to knock out the champ, but it may very well go the distance, and as Sly Stallone taught us, that’s occasionally all that matters. But who the hell knows? It’s not like Focus hasn’t had a massive success based primarily on word-of-mouth this year, right?
