Monday night in Allston is when the freaks come out to play, and tonight (May 19) the allure in the air carves a path to Brighton Music Hall, where Squid deliver a blissful cacophony of sounds that should hit differently away from the weekend’s distractions.
The English art-rock band in February provided new album Cowards, the type of record that allows for excited daydreaming over just how it’ll sound in a live setting, and last month followed it up with a fresh outtake from the sessions called “The Hearth And Circle Round Fire,” a six-minute epic that expands their cocktail of experimental post-punk stirred with electronica, folk, and psych.
“‘The Hearth And Circle Round Fire’ is a punky tune that came together quite easily but we felt dissatisfied with that ease and decided to record it as a 15 minute jam, rip it apart and tape it back together,” says Squid vocalist and drummer Ollie Judge. “Lyrically, it was inspired by the dystopian worlds of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 and Kay Dick’s They, worlds which everyday people succumb to mass censorship and propaganda with only a small amount of people willing to fight against it.”
Those folx will likely all be in the venue with us tonight.
