Vivid Bloom scale ‘gazing glacial heights with ‘Under the Sound’

Some of the most memorable moments at Boston Calling over the past dozen years came under cloudy, dark, and ominous skies: A rain-soaked inaugural edition in 2013 at City Hall Plaza as The National, Marina, and MS MR held court; a frenzied mad dash to greet Lorde on that same stage two years later after the thunder and lightning finally subsided; and a spontaneous dance party two years ago in the hockey arena during an unexpected weather delay.

We’re too far out to know the forecast for this Memorial Day weekend’s festivities, but we do know this: If gray clouds roll in, a sudden darkness cascades over the Harvard Athletic Complex, and a brisk, breezy chill begins to permeate the spring air, we can only hope Vivid Bloom are there on the Orange Stage to appropriately soundtrack the gloomy vibe.

The dynamic Boston shoegaze band, which dropped one of our favorite records of 2023 in the expansive Out of Focus, delivered another glacial tune this past Friday (May 2), and “Under The Sound” has the potential to provide a motherfucking moment unlike any other when we (hopefully) hear it tear through the unsuspecting masses with noisy precision on that quaint Sunday afternoon.

The rain may come from above, but Vivid Bloom’s reign comes from within.
