Oh, the knee-weakening ecstasy of MARINA singing about a wrecked marriage and luxury in the same sentence. “On the street, sweet-talkin’ / Push-up bra in my diamonds / Gift from my ex-husband,” the Welsh pop star brags on her new single “CUNTISSIMO,” released today (April 11). The song and its accompanying music video are a decadent revival of MARINA’s Electra Heart ethos: Bubblegum brattiness aged to perfection, delivered over a sizzling bed of synths.
The new song arrived with an announcement revealing PRINCESS OF POWER, MARINA’s sixth record, due out June 6. (It feels worth noting that Charli XCX’s phenomenon BRAT arrived last year on June 7 — that summer air truly bodes well for self-assured women in pop.) “CUNTISSIMO” is the album’s third single, and follows prior releases “BUTTERFLY” and “CUPID’S GIRL” with one of MARINA’s finest sexpot anthems in a decade.
“So often, women don’t think they’re allowed to feel their sexuality in a way that doesn’t involve how it looks for men,” MARINA says about the themes in “CUNTISSIMO.” “They feel that it’s been coopted — I would love to be able to free younger women of that, the feeling that our bodies don’t quite belong to us.”
