Back in the lonely days of summer a new show listening immediately jumped off the screen and into a great big pile of dead leaves. This highlight in red, yellow, orange, and brown marker came from julie, the Los Angles alt-rock band and art collective that we all figured would be our new favorite band by the time autumn delivered the rising trio’s headlining North American tour to Boston’s Paradise Rock Club tonight (October 20). And we were correct.
After impressing with post-‘gaze shadow-roar single “clairbourne practice” and touring with Faye Webster and Alex G over the summer, julie dropped debut album my anti-aircraft friend last month via Atlantic Records, and things have only accelerated from there.
The pitch copy sums it up: “For listeners who came of age amidst global pandemics, tumultuous political climates, and a host of looming natural and social crises, the sound of a band like julie could equally be a cathartic escape, or a shelter in which to locate a better sense of self-acceptance in a precarious world.”
Hear it live tonight, and keep space warm on all those Best of ’24 playlists coming a few weeks from now.
