Welp, we must be trippin’ balls, because we totally botched that headline. There is no band called Psychedelic Jesus and Mary Chain Furs, regardless if there should be; what we should have posted is that The Jesus and Mary Chain and Psychedelic Furs — two icons of the classic alternative era — are playing The Orpheum in Boston tonight (October 2).
Whenever we get one of these co-headlining tours, we always marvel at the amount of hits we’re likely to hear over the course of the evening, and this one delivers mightily. But it’s not entirely a nostalgia act, as Jesus and Mary Chain’s March album Glasgow Eyes found the band sounding as fresh as ever, even reaching their highest chart point since 1987’s Darklands. We hyped the record’s lead single “jamcod” when it first hit.
For the Furs, they released Made of Rain in Summer 2020, and it holds up nicely alongside Richard Butler and crew’s forever underrated arsenal of era-defining standards (even if Covid kind of slowed any momentum it may have had). Classics like “Dumb Waiters,” “The Ghost In You,” “Pretty In Pink,” “Love My Way,” “Heaven,” “Heartbreak Beat” have all lined recent stateside setlists, and sound sound pretty sweet bouncing off the Orpheum’s historic halls this evening. Hit the Spotify embeds for a pregame soundtrack.
