We’ve had quite a bit of Chicano Batman in our lives this year, and that’s never a bad thing. The Los Angeles psych-soul band dropped new album Notebook Fantasy back in March (which should resurface on several Year in Review lists come December), and we chatted with them about it ahead of a lively show here in Boston at the Paradise Rock Club.
Now, ahead of an extended tour run that takes them to the UK and Europe, Chicano Batman have released a chilled-out new cruiser jam called “Tanto Arriba Como Abajo,” which translates from Spanish to “Both Above and Below.”
The instrumental track was produced by Sam Cohen (Danger Mouse, Curtis Harding, Kevin Morby), and feels especially purposeful in this calm stretch of August where we’re all just laying low waiting for autumn to arrive.
“’Tanto Arriba Como Abajo’ was written and recorded spontaneously during a session break at our bassist Eduardo’s studio,” says guitarist Carlos Arevalo. “Most of what you hear is what was played in the room by five musicians completely in the moment. It has been some time since we’ve released an instrumental, so to remedy that we’ve decided to share this one from the vault.”
