Divine Sweater find delight in their delusions with ‘Deep Side’

Pop quiz: How many degrees separate Divine Sweater from Kevin Bacon? Ten points to whichever savvy TikToker says “one.”

The Boston band today (May 7) unveils “Deep Side,” a tune that’s already Bacon-approved thanks to a viral TikTok from 2022. “If you look closely you can see the exact moment our drummer (Anderson .Paak) realizes he needs to stop dancing and enter the song” reads the video’s text, as drummer Chris Southiere shimmies through a recording section and hops on the kit with milliseconds to spare.

The joke is twofold: Southiere’s off-guard reaction is priceless, but he’s also clearly not Anderson .Paak, a fact that apparently did not bother Bacon. The actor commented “still didn’t miss a beat” with a drum emoji, adding to a thread of questions about the name of the song and where to find it.

At long last, Bacon & Co. can hear the full, polished rendition of Divine Sweater’s “Deep Side,” complete with a vampy music video that places the band in a supernatural club. The song is a self-described “infatuation anthem” that finds vocalist Meghan Kelleher attempting to quell a “million different molecules not under control” as her heart swells n’ swoons. The song’s starry-eyed lyricism lends a twinkle to lush ripples of keyboard and saxophone, coalescing into a chill indie-pop tune about not keeping your cool in the slightest.

Following the song’s proper debut today, Divine Sweater will break out “Deep Side” for their much-anticipated Boston Calling set, which kickstarts the entire festival on Friday, May 24 from the Happy Valley Red Stage.

“We’re just so excited to get it out into the world, especially knowing some people might be anticipating it,” Kelleher tells Vanyaland. “It’s also hard to tell sometimes when you’re recording which songs are going to stand out or which ones are going to come out best, but the response to that video on social media was a great first reaction… Now we just need to figure out how to get the final recording of the song to Kevin Bacon.”

Tune in below.
