V3 Weekend: Cat Power Sings Dylan, Tim Dillon, ‘Lisa Frankenstein’ Brunch

Focus Features

Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, Vanyaland‘s guide to help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of MusicComedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.

Music: Cat Power Sings Dylan at The Chevalier

Last fall, Cat Power released Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert, a new live album that’s pretty much exactly what the title implies. The veteran singer-songwriter and Atlanta native born Chan Marshall has now taken the herculean record out on the road for a North American tour that stops at The Chevalier in Medford this Saturday (February 17). We were a bit skeptical at first, but were quickly sold after watching Marshall and her band showcase the goods onThe Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where they aired out the closing track on the 15-song album, the timeless “Like A Rolling Stone.” Hey, it sounds great, and Ol’ Bob should be proud. There should be a nice high coming into this Medford show, as Cat Power just enchanted a crowd at New York’s Carnegie Hall on Valentine’s Day, which Ultimate Classic Rock described as “a mesmerizing display of artistic admiration.”

CAT POWER SINGS DYLAN :: Saturday, February 17 at The Chevalier Theatre, 30 Forest St. in Medford, MA :: 8 p.m., $55 to $95 :: Event info :: Advance tickets

Comedy: Tim Dillon at The Wilbur

From Dylan to Dillon, all in a V3 Weekend. Long Island comedian, writer, and actor Tim Dillon has been holding court at The Wilbur since Wednesday, and tonight (February 16) offers two final chances to see the A Real Hero funnyman in all his glorious live action. Not only did we hype the gigs in Mic’d Up, but Comedy Editor Jason Greenough also got Dillon on the horn for an exclusive interview, where he gives love to our city in a way only a native New Yorker can. “I just love Boston. It’s one of the greatest places to do comedy because it has a lot of smart people, and a lot of stupid people, and those are the ingredients you need to make anything good,” he tells Vanyaland. “You need a mix of intelligent people and idiots, and that mix is so prevalent in Boston, and that’s why I say it’s probably my favorite place to perform. It’s the perfect incubator for comedy.”

TIM DILLON: AMERICAN ROYALTY :: Friday, February 16 at The Wilbur Theatre, 246 Tremont St. in Boston, MA :: 6:30 and 9 p.m., $49 to $89 :: Advance tickets

Film/TV: ‘Lisa Frankenstein’ Brunch at Alamo Drafthouse

Alright, we’ll keep it real — the reviews for Zelda Williams’ goth rom-com Lisa Frankenstein are not great, and it was panned pretty hard by our own film editor, Nick Johnston. Which makes the idea of pairing it with brunch and cocktails all the more appealing, and that’s what Alamo Drafthouse has in store for this weekend. The Seaport cinema has two brunch showings this weekend (Saturday, February 17 and Sunday, February 18), and the food menu and cocktail list might make Diablo Cody’s script a little easier to digest. We’ll still maintain it seems like a pretty visually appealing film (we’re just suckers for all that bisexual lighting), and remember, everyone h-a-t-e-d Jennifer’s Body when it first came out 15 years ago. So what the hell, all this might still make a fun post-Valentine’s Day date for the subculture before we all fuck off to ManRay later on.

‘LISA FRANKENSTEIN’ BRUNCH :: Saturday, February 17 and Sunday, February 18 at Alamo Drafthouse, 60 Seaport Blvd. in Boston, MA :: 12:25 p.m., $10.99 :: Event info and tickets
