Oh 2023, we’re not through with you just yet. As we return from a holiday recharge and set the New Year in our alt-media crosshairs, we take one last look back at the past year through one of the most trusted lenses in Boston — longtime DJ, producer, and party maven Nick Minieri.

His annual Hometown mix dropped at the tail end of ’23, and, as usual, it’s a mindful collection of the Boston beat sound, with 55 tracks spanning a spectrum of genres over two hours, all while showcasing nearly 70 artists from across New England. And as is custom, he spotlights a local venue that’s no more as a sort of “home base” for the mix, giving the collection a ghostly brick and mortar residence. Last year’s mix raised a glass to Good Life, and 2020’s saluted Great Scott.

“Had a lot of fun putting it together this year and the cover art is a tribute to RISE, a seminal after hours spot many of us enjoyed in the 2000s and early 2010s,” Minieri writes.

Hit Minieri’s Insta post for a collection of photos he snapped at RISE from 2009 to 2014, the final years just before the infamous Stuart Street spot closed, and see below for his message that accompanies the playlist. Then go hit play on his mix, which features contributions from BIA, Cousin Stizz, Lightfoot, Mel Go Hard, Clark D, ToriTori, Colin Domigan, Saucy Lady, and plenty more, including Minieri himself.
