It’s a tale as old as time: A young band writes a cool new song, realizes it sounds like a Sonic Youth b-side, and abandons it until some time later when it gets revisited and fleshed out into something a little more pure. That seems to be at play with Flat Party’s new sonic seducer single “Glances In The Dark,” which hits the streams today (October 24) via Submarine Cat Records. And no, we didn’t just make up the Sonic Youth bit.
“‘Glances In The Dark’ began as an old demo from ages ago that I stumbled upon earlier this year. It originally sounded too much like a Sonic Youth b-side – faster, heavier and less nuanced than it is now,” says guitarist Rory O’Rourke. “During a creative lull, I decided to revisit it, drawing a lot of inspiration from Alex G. However, as we started playing it live, ‘Glances’ took on a sound that’s now distinctly ours.”
And it sounds pretty fucking tight. A yearning floater of a guitar-pop track with a delicate flamboyance and daydream ambition, described as “a song about betrayal and lovelessness” by vocalist Jack Lawther, “Glances In The Dark” will be included on the London band’s forthcoming self-titled debut EP, due in January. It was recorded and produced by Andy Savours (My Bloody Valentine, Black Country New Road) at Battery Studios in Flat Party’s hometown.
