The year 2003 was a busy one for Ben Gibbard. In February, his celebrated electronic-pop project The Postal Service released its debut and only album Give Up, followed by emo stalwarts Death Cab for Cutie issuing Transatlanticism that October. With the 20th anniversary for both arriving this year, The Postal Service and Death Cab have teamed up for a co-headlining North American tour that finds Gibbard pulling blissful double-duty across 17 shows, performing Give Up and Transatlanticism in full.
After a trio of New England shows that kicked off this past weekend, the tour rolls into Boston’s MGM Music Hall at Fenway tonight and Wednesday (September 12 and 13). CHVRCHES’ Lauren Mayberry, who just released a new solo single, will open up both shows before she plays a sold-out Brighton Music Hall next week.
While Death Cab is no stranger to the road, and has its own headlining tours across 2023, these shows will mark the first live performances from The Postal Service in a decade.
“I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003,” says Gibbard. “The Postal Service record came out, Transatlanticism came out. These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year.”
For The Postal Service sets, Gibbard will be joined by collaborator Jimmy Tamborello and Jenny Lewis, who provided backing vocals on Give Up. Death Cab’s lineup will be rounded out by Nick Harmer, Dave Depper, Zac Rae, and Jason McGerr.
