In her new music video for “leave me for dead”, GAYLE stages her own funeral as she says farewell to those around her. But few rising alt-pop stars have shown such life this summer, as the Texas native has opened shows on both Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour and P!nk’s Summer Carnival, as well as landing a track (“butterflies”) on the chart-topping Barbie soundtrack. The glow-up is real.
Dropping this past Friday (August 25), “leave me for dead” was first introduced to fans while GAYLE was opening the Summer Carnival tour in Europe and the United Kingdom, and was written by the artist with Lostboy (Tiesto, and Ava Max), Cleo Tighe (Kehlani, P!nk), and Starsmith (Kehlani, Ellie Goulding). It follows a string of singles that have kept GAYLE on everyone’s playlists throughout the year so far. But there’s an ultimatum carried within the infectious track, so the listener has to decide if they are in or if they’re out.
“This song is a eulogy to my past relationships and the intensity of the feeling that someone leaving me is a permanent decision,” GAYLE says. “Once you leave, you’re gone. You have to make the decision to leave me for dead.”
Well, hey — we’re sticking around.
Watch the video, directed by filmmaker Acacia Evans (Miranda Lambert, Yellowcard), below, and catch GAYLE here in Boston when she brings The Scared But Trying Tour over to Allston’s Brighton Music Hall on November 7. That should be a fun show; life in full bloom.
