Long before Black-Mirror-esque broadcasts about submersibles gripped the world, Divine Sweater were mapping out a different dystopian plunge. The Boston band’s storytelling goes full sci-fi on their May album Down Deep (A Nautical Apocalypse), a 34-minute immersion in the suffocating effects of climate change. The record predicts the world’s watery fate with intimate sketches, using Divine Sweater’s breezy alt-pop to cushion the danger on the horizon. Its harrowing narrative coalesces in the band’s animated music video “In the Comedown,” released today (July 7) ahead of their headlining show at The Sinclair on Saturday.
The visual arrives just a day before the band’s performance at The Sinclair with Juniper and Alright, Thanks biggest hometown show to date.
“Our close friend Gregory Fisher had the vision to outline the album’s plot in an animated video and ‘In the Comedown’ was the perfect song to accompany it,” the band explains. “The video captures characters seeking shelter in abandoned submarines in a last-ditch effort to keep living while the apocalypse happens around them.”
Surprisingly whimsical imagery whisks by as the video propels Divine Sweater’s warning through the ocean’s uncharted depths. The animated cast ultimately uncovers a shot at survival, an unexpected nod to the notion that there’s still hope for Earth — you just have to dig “down deep” to find it.
