Music: Deep Cuts grand opening
It’s been a rough few years for live music venues around the Greater Boston area, so any time we get to celebrate a new venue’s grand opening, we simply have not choice but to raise a glass — and a sandwich. This Saturday (May 20), eatery and rock club Deep Cuts opens in its new location in Medford Square, this time with a new 240-person capacity space booked by Get To The Gig Boston. The opening-night lineup is solid, with Zip Tie Handcuffs, Black Beach, and Today Junior christening the new stage.
Victoria Wasylak wrote up an inside look at Deep Cuts in April, detailing its overall sound and vision: “Our space isn’t your typical brewery,” says owner and co-founder Ian McGregor. “Deep Cuts has a shared focus on music, food, and beer. …We hope to be a home for creative types to come by during the day for a sandwich and/or a beer and network — then at night for people to come see upcoming local and touring acts.”

Comedy: Samantha Bee at The Wilbur
As Jason Greenough notes in this week’s Mic’d Up, there’s a ton of great live comedy options around town, from Boston Comedy Festival to the return of Brookline native Alex Edelman. But we’re headed down to the Theatre District this Sunday (May 21) to catch Samantha Bee hold court at The Wilbur, the night after Tracy Morgan records a new special on Tremont Street.
Writes Greenough: “Seeing Bee on a stand-up stage is certainly not how we’re used to her comedy being delivered, but with the cancellation of Full Frontal last year, we’ll have to be open to a new way to throw down with our ‘favorite woman,’ as her tour name indicates. With that being said, if her current slate of stand-up material is anything like her run on TBS or The Daily Show, it’s bound to be one hell of a night.”

Film/TV: ‘Fast X’ in theaters
Did you know there is a new Fast & Furious film out today? Did you know it’s the 10th in the action film’s franchise? Well, Fast X hits the big screen today (May 19), and Vanyaland Film Editor Nick Johnston will have a full review published this afternoon. UPDATE: Read it right now.
While we edit that bad boy, here’s what he had to say last year when the title was revealed: “We’re gonna be real with you: This is a very goofy title, though it was inevitable that they would eventually run out of ways to make Furious [Insert Number Here] continue to sound cool. Fasten remands our favorite combo of pun-and-call-to-action, but Fast X feels like the result of a Hunger Games-style battle royale between marketing executives. It’s only inevitable that they would come up with something that either sounds like off-brand erectile dysfunction pills resting between CBD pens and phone chargers at your local gas station counter or some sort of laxative… Regardless of whether or not the title’s any good, we’re still hyped as fuck for Fast X.”
