At some point or another, we all set out to change our lives. For our very next effort, which could arrive at any moment, David Wax Museum have provided the technicolor soundtrack. The Boston-born “Mexo-Americana” indie-folk duo of David Wax and Suz Slezak are set to unveil 12th (!) studio album You Must Change Your Life this Friday, but not before a homecoming gig tonight (May 4) at Somerville’s Arts at the Armory.

It’s the second date of a release tour for the Virginia project, and it’s fitting that Wax and Slezak showcase the record here in town on the eve of its release via Nine Mile Records. You Must Change Your Life was produced and mixed by Dan Molad (Lucius), recorded at Montrose Recording in Richmond, and recently dubbed by Wax as his “favorite record” of the band’s prolific career.

“It feels like the culmination/maturation of what we’ve been striving for these past 15 years,” Wax reveals on Facebook. “This is kind of record I dreamed about when I first fell in love with music and imagined a future where I could one day get to make an album like this — a whole sonic world that is sensual, textured, deeply grooved and fully fleshed out, encompassing the emotional gamut of a life. It’s the perfect alchemy of songs, musicians, producer, & studio. Although the path to releasing it has been long and slow and bumpy, the actual making of the record was full of ease and joy.”

Back in March, David Wax Museum dropped the video for the album’s title track, an exuberant tune baked into the decisions we face as our lives start to steer off course. Dive into it below.
