Gary Gulman announces memoir ‘Misfit: Growing Up Awkward in the ’80s’

Via The Wilbur

Over the course of his career on stage, Gary Gulman has let us in on an awful lot of life stories. Now, he’s taking us even deeper into the origin story of “The Gul,” but this time, he’s putting pen to paper to deliver the goods. Fair warning: it might get a little awkward.

As announced earlier this week, Gulman has finished his very first literary endeavor, a memoir titled Misfit: Growing Up Awkward in the ‘80s. Due out on September 19 via Flatiron books, the book will bring us through the full gauntlet of school years for the Peabody native, reflecting on the awkward and difficult moments and interactions between Kindergarten and 12th grade, delivered with the same kind of obsessive detail, genuine humor, and heartfelt sincerity that we’ve come to love from Gulman for over 20 years.

Whether it’s stories of failed show-and-tell presentations and fumbling in his first football game, or memories and anecdotes about his family, friends, and neighbors, the book brings us deep into Gulman’s childhood landscape both inside and away from the classroom. With vivid detail and literary illustrations of everything from the old neighborhood to the high school hallways, the memoir offers quite a road map through Gulman’s most formative years, while also bulking up on the nostalgic aspects of ‘80s, from scented markers to the indifference to sunscreen and everything in between.

The book is available for pre-order now.

In addition to the book’s release date, Gulman has also announced a corresponding stand-up and book tour that will bring him and his latest project all over the country. Starting in Brooklyn on September 19, Gulman will make his way to cities all over the US including Boston, Los Angeles, Asheville, Atlanta, St. Paul and more before wrapping it up on December 10 in Philadelphia.
