A24’s ‘Talk to Me’ trailer summons the spirits of the damned

Talk to Me
A24

Another day, another trailer for a new A24 horror project that the distributor wants you to know is the scariest film that they’ve ever released. We’ll be real with you: Talk to Me is a pretty solid little horror film, but don’t walk in there expecting it to totally shake up your worldview — we caught it at the tail of Sundance this year, and we know this for a fact (though we didn’t review it because of the normal festival time-crunch issues). Though with this marketing, we do have to ask a question: is this them planning for a future after Ari Aster? Bob Eggers already left the shop, and now Aster’s dropping something that might piss off his biggest fans. Whatever the reason, here’s the trailer they dropped earlier on Tuesday.

Take a look:

Here’s a synopsis, but we’re taking it from the Sundance program because, hey, they don’t have to talk this thing up as “the scariest movie ever” or whatever:

“Conjuring spirits has become the latest local party craze, and looking for a distraction on the anniversary of her mother’s death, teenage Mia (Sophie Wilde) is determined to get a piece of the otherworldly action. When her group of friends gathers for another unruly séance with the mysterious embalmed hand that promises a direct line to the spirits, they’re unprepared for the consequences of bending the rules through prolonged contact. As the boundary between worlds collapses and disturbing supernatural visions increasingly haunt Mia, she rushes to undo the horrific damage before it’s irreversible.

Filmmaking duo (and twin brothers) Danny and Michael Philippou of @RackaRacka YouTube channel fame suspend us in the foreboding and nightmarish realm of their debut feature, making the most of their twisted propensity for the surreal and grotesque. Effortlessly blending the creepiness of a ghost tale with the modern sensibilities of a horror-thriller for the Insta-generation, ‘Talk to Me’ exposes an uncanny reality where the dead roam eerily close to the living.”

Talk to Me hits theaters on July 28. In preparation, you should watch Kasi Lemmons’ Talk to Me, which has absolutely nothing to do with this movie aside from the title, but has a hell of a Don Cheadle performance in it.
