Cambridge venue Atwood’s Tavern to close this month

Boston’s independent live music circuit has taken another hit, as Atwood’s Tavern has announced it will be “closing our doors for the last time” at the end of this month, March 31. The news was posted to social media on Wednesday (March 1) afternoon, taking many by surprise, and displayed as a top banner on the Cambridge room’s homepage.

“We would like to wholeheartedly thank everyone who has been a part of our community over the past 16 years,” the post states. “Atwood’s wouldn’t be Atwood’s without all of you. So, if you get the chance, come by in the next month to say farewell.”

Notable shows on this month’s calendar include Gatch with Grace Givertz and Keyboard Dog on Thursday; Matt Charette & The Truer Sound on March 10; Hallelujah The Hills on March 18; and the Lyle Brewer Quartet on March 19. The venue’s final posted show, according to this announcement, would feature Soggy Po Boys on the stated closing date of March 31.

In December, Atwood’s was nominated for a 2022 Boston Music Award in the “Under 250 Capacity” category of Live Music Venue of the Year. The space, also a popular restaurant and bar, appears to be staying in business in some capacity, though that future looks uncertain.

“This place has been a neighborhood spot and will continue to be,” the message concludes. “Atwood’s will be joining The OverDraught, Eddie’s, The Willow Café, Smitty’s, and the rest, as establishments that called this building on Cambridge Street home. While we don’t know yet who will be picking up the mantle, we are confident that they will provide the neighborhood with the community space it deserves. Thanks for all of the good times and memories.”
