There are few projects these days making music as spiritually captivating and emotionally consuming as Korine. The Philadelphia-based dark electronic-pop duo have constantly weathered expectations raised mightily with each release; first with their genre-defining 2018 synth-pop masterpiece New Arrangements, and then further bolstered by 2020’s emphatic The Night We Raise.
This month, Korine have unveiled third studio album Tear (pronounced through a cry but open to your more aggressive interpretation), via unfuckwithable label Born Losers Records, and it holds steady as their most intricate and elaborate album to date. It represents a subtle sonic shift for the duo of Trey Frey and Morgy Ramone, exploring more linear musical territory over its 10 no-skip tracks without ever losing the heart-on-sleeve emotion and blurred hypnotism that makes the band so magnetic.
Korine are now set to take Tear out to the masses with a 33-date spring North American tour. It gets started May 11 in Baltimore and wraps June 17 in Brooklyn, with a rare double shot of Massachusetts goodness towards the tail end — a June 14 live show at The Middle East in Cambridge, followed by a DJ set at the Central Square venue the next night. There’s also a June 16 show at Dusk in Providence, a city that always comes correct and get properly animated whenever Korine pay a visit.
Get into Tear below, allow the slow-burn record to wash over your properly through repeated listens, and scan through all the Korine live dates after the Spotify jump.
