Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, Vanyaland‘s guide to help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of Music, Comedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.
Music: SuperSmashBroz’ Plus One at The Paradise
This could be a Boston Thriving column, or it could just be another SuperSmashBroz throwdown. Fresh off the TD Garden parquet earlier in the week bringing more homegrown entertainment to the Celtics halftime show, blood brothers Muyi Fre$co and Noma Nomz take on The Paradise Rock Club this Saturday (February 11) for the latest installment of their Plus One party series. Having already held court at Brighton Music Hall and Big Night Live, this twirl at The ‘Dise features Jerk x Jollof, with A.Y.C.E. (Yung Towfu & Mozes), Gazaa Doll, Blakito, Supastar P, and more.
“The premise of the title is to promote an inclusionary environment where young professionals and social influencers feel inclined to invite one (or more!) of their peers to join in for an unforgettable experience,” Nomz told us last summer. Get into it, and revisit SuperSmashBroz’ recent holiday ‘Magic’.
SUPERSMASHBROZ PLUS ONE :: Saturday, February 11 at The Paradise Rock Club, 967 Commonwealth Ave. in Boston, MA :: 10 p.m., 21-plus, $20 :: Event info :: Advance tickets
Comedy: Jordan Jensen at Laugh Boston
As we touched on in a rare comedy offering of This Show Is Tonight, Jordan Jensen is here in town for a three-night, four-show swing at Laugh Boston. If you missed last night’s kickoff, fear not: There are still three chances to catch the Brooklyn comic this weekend in the Seaport.
Here’s word from V Comedy Editor Jason Greenough: “The lines that divide the comedy scene from the punk and hardcore kids seem to be consistently blurring more as time goes on, and in the case of Jordan Jensen, that LPM/PMA hybrid is on its way in heavy doses. [Jensen supplies] an end-of-the-week unleashing of the refreshingly upfront and open brand of stand-up that has brought her to clubs, late-night and festival stages all over the country, with credits including The Late Late Show with James Corden, Just For Laughs, Nashville Comedy Fest, Orlando Comedy Fest, among others.”
JORDAN JENSEN :: Friday, February 10 and Saturday, February 11 at Laugh Boston, 425 Summer St. in Boston, MA :: Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 7 and 10 p.m., $25 :: Advance tickets
Film/TV: Superb Owl with ‘Clash of the Titans’ & ‘Labyrinth’ at The Brattle
Well there is a big game on Sunday (February 12), and for many of us here in New England, it’s admittedly tough to give a shit. So we’re hitting the theaters for our own kind of brawny beefcake action on the gridiron of fantasy, and we’re not talking 80 For Brady — nope, The Brattle has a double feature of Superb Owl action, “celebrating some of the greatest owls of all time” with iconic ’80s films Clash of the Titans and Labyrinth on a screen bigger than the one at home.
On Clash of the Titans: “With stop-motion special effects from the legendary Ray Harryhausen, this 1980s fantasy epic is a pure delight on the big screen. Harry Hamlin plays the ancient Greek hero Perseus who, with the aid of magical weapons and a helpful mechanical owl, must go on a quest to rescue the Princess Andromeda. And on Labyrinth: “David Bowie plays the Goblin King Jareth –occasionally appearing as a majestic, moon-faced owl — who engages in a dangerous game with a rebellious teen who has impulsively wished for him to take her baby brother away.
‘CLASH OF THE TITANS’ & ‘LABYRINTH’ :: Sunday, February 12 at The Brattle, 40 Brattle St. in Cambridge, MA :: ‘Clash of the Titans’ at 1:45 and 6:30 p.m., ‘Labyrinth’ at 4:15 and 9 p.m. :: Event and ticket info
