Music is seasonal, but Kim Petras is eternal. So as the new alt-pop queen presides over her own houses of sultry sonic worship, from last year’s chart-topping collab with Sam Smith in “Unholy” to the revved-up all-inclusive romp “If Jesus Was A Rockstar” (not to mention last February’s crux-under-the-covers EP Slut Pop), the German-born, Los Angeles-based artist unleashes a mighty dose of chill in a new single called “brrr.”
Out today (January 20) via Republic Records/Amigo Records and produced by ILYA (Ariana Grande, Normani, Ellie Goulding), “brrr” is a capital-letter boast with a lower-case toast that clumps and thumps under an industrial bounce. It centers around a lyrical theme of finding a companion who will come close and show you just how confidently cool they are, free from intimidation and insecurity. Instead of turning up the heat, Petras shifts gears and encases this lust in ice.
“I’m so excited for you to hear this,” Petras writes on Insta. “It’s one of the funnest rollouts I’ve done in a while. I miss you all so much and I hope this song gives you a taste of what’s to come this year. I’m so excited to perform it for you soon! Let me know if you dig it…brrr-ah“.
Petras will perform this frigid new banger this Monday (January 23) on Late Night With Seth Meyers, and also sit down in the chair for her first late-night television interview. Catch Petras everywhere else — if you can — as she appears next month with Smith at the BRIT Awards; as the headliner of Sydney WorldPride in Australia in March; and at Governors Ball in New York City come June.
