The Zombies’ annual vow that “this will be our year” lost its charm around 2020, so forgive us if we’d prefer that Divine Sweater deliver the message instead.
“You said ‘this would be the year’ / Loud and clear,” lead singer Meghan Kelleher croons on the Boston band’s dreamy new single “All the Way Back,” released today (January 17) via Better Company Records. As the followup to 2021’s Divine Sweater Presents: The Ten Year Plan, “All the Way Back” divulges its own agenda, crystalizing high hopes for change with sweeping synth-pop. Dreamlike melodies envelop Divine Sweater’s mellow — but contagious — optimism, which apparently spread across TikTok when the band posted a teaser last month.
“‘All The Way Back’ is set in the high you feel after finally breaking free of a miserable situation,” explains Kelleher. “The [single’s] narrator is full of blind, ecstatic hope for the future after realizing that nothing was truly holding them back in the first place. The song centers around a cinematic image of the narrator gazing up at the sun from under the water: ‘Looking up I thought that I saw heaven.’ The track is a sign to quit your job, move to a new city, take that risk, and never look back.”
Peer “All the Way Back” with Divine Sweater below, and catch them performing next Saturday (January 28) with Photo Negative at O’Brien’s Pub in Allston.
