Usually when the Boston Bruins play hockey, they’re at TD Garden. And usually when The Black Keys play live in Boston, they’re at the North Station barn as well. So it was a treat to see everyone take it outside yesterday (January 2) as the Bruins hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins at Fenway Park for the 2023 Winter Classic, with the Akron blues rock duo headlining entertainment festivities that included the Boston Pops brassing up the ol’ standards (you know the ones) and Bell Biv DeVoe singing the national anthem.
Staged out in Fenway’s right field just off the makeshift hockey rink, The Black Keys busted out a trio of songs — the crowd-pleasing party starter “Howlin’ For You”; a Boston Pops-assisted “Gold on the Ceiling”; and a groovy rendition of “Wild Child.” Check out the goods below as ktvelde captured fan-filmed footage from the grandstand.
And though it wasn’t an official concert performance, The Black Keys set was just the start of a busy year of live music at the ballpark. Scheduled to play the Fenway Concert Series so far this year are Kane Brown, Dead & Company, P!nk, Morgen Wallen, and the Zac Brown Band. Get the full lineup via mlb.com.
Oh, and the Bruins beat the Penguins 2-1.
