Witness the baffling oddity that is the ’80 For Brady’ trailer

80 For Brady
Paramount

You know who’s having a pretty shitty autumn? Tom Brady, that’s who. New England’s favorite son (who, like many of our best residents, moved here from a place like Michigan and then summarily moved to Florida once they neared retirement age) ain’t doin’ too hot right now. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, only two years removed from pounding the stuffing out of a white-hot Kansas City Chiefs team in the Super Bowl, are floundering, though a .500 record is still good enough to be atop of their division. You can practically see his frustration on the sideline each week, and you have to wonder if the retirement fake-out he did earlier this year was really such a great idea. He’s also in the process of a seemingly acrimonious divorce from Gisele and picked a really bad horse in the crypto race — the now-bankrupt FTX, if you’ve been keeping up with the news — to promote and invest in.

But there’ll still be one thing Brady will have even as his career and this chapter of his life end: The undying devotion of older women, which the new film 80 For Brady pays tribute to. We wrote about this one a few months ago when it’d just been announced, and we were astonished by the cast list: Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno, Sally Field, and Jane Fonda are the leads, and Brady will appear alongside them in the film. Paramount dropped a trailer for the project earlier on Thursday, and boy howdy, it is the goofiest thing we’ve seen in a good long while.

Peep it:

Here’s a very short synopsis, which just can’t quite capture just how spectacularly odd this project is even though it tries:

’80 For Brady’ is inspired by the true story of four best friends living life to the fullest when they take a wild trip to the 2017 Super Bowl LI to see their hero Tom Brady play. Starring Academy Award nominee Lily Tomlin, Academy Award winner Jane Fonda, Academy Award winner Rita Moreno and Academy Award winner Sally Field, with 7-time Super Bowl Champion and producer Tom Brady.”

That’s right; there’s an Oscar winner in that cast for every one of Brady’s MVPs. Jesus.

Anyway, 80 For Brady hits theaters on February 3, just in time for the Super Bowl. The Bucs are still somehow only +1800 to win, but we imagine those odds will increase in an inverse relationship with the odds that your mother-in-law will be in the theater for this on day one will decrease.
