Genesis Owusu rides a wave to help us all ‘Get Inspired’

When we hyped Paramore’s 2023 North American tour, the list of opening acts joining Hayley Williams and the boys jumped off the screen. But alongside the likes of Bloc Party, Foals, and The Linda Lindas, perhaps the one to get hyped on the most was Genesis Owusu, the Ghanaian-Australian artist that appears poised for a global breakthrough.

Born Kofi Owusu-Ansah, the musician made his national late night television debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert earlier this year, on the strength of 2021 debut album Smiling with No Teeth, and now finds his recent single “Get Inspired” featured in a massive Apple ad campaign for Apple Fitness+. The propulsive genre-bending track dropped last month, and Chris Yee’s animation brings the visualizer to colorful life.

There’s no Boston date on the Paramore tour, leading some to think the band is playing Boston Calling (Paramore also has a Memorial Day weekend festival gig in Atlantic City, so they’re in the region around that time). If that’s the case, hopefully Owusu comes along for the ride for a fun outdoor afternoon performance at Harvard Athletic Complex, or plugs in a club date to hold court on his own terms (he played The Sinclair this past April). Either way, we’ll be hearing a lot from Genesis Owusu in the coming months.

Check out “Get Inspired,” as well as the oncoming wave of an Apple+ ad, below.
