Datcha project a internal strength on the soulful ‘Glory’

Via the artist

We first got hip to the soulful and intimate bedroom pop sounds of Datcha late last fall, when the Boston duo of Josh and Julie Friedman were part of the Boston Music Awards’ 617 Sessions series. Our affinity for the songwriting and production talents of Josh run far deeper into his (and our) past, from being ahead of the game on Kate Bush in 2018 to his various efforts under his That One Eyed Kid moniker. But Datcha emerge once again, and on the eve of a DIY tour of Europe, the duo on Friday (June 17) released a new song steeped in personal ambition called “Glory.”

The slow-core “Glory,” with an expansive experimentalism that lyrically explores themes of masculinity, vulnerability, and internal strength, was recorded, mixed, and mastered in collaboration with Bradford Krieger and Big Nice Studio in Rhode Island. It follows Datcha’s 2021 debut self-titled album, written within the first few stages of pandemic-induced quarantine, and the aforementioned 617Session effort.

“‘Glory’ is about projecting strength,” Datcha tell Vanyaland, “how we’ll often choose to tell ourselves and our partners that we’re solid when we know we’re not doing so great.”

The pair will take that strength across the Atlantic for select shows over the next few weeks; fire up “Glory” via Spotify and get their Euro show details after the jump.
