Editor’s Note: Boston Calling Music Festival kicked off with a fury on Friday (May 27), the first of three days at Harvard Athletic Complex in Allston that features a diverse bill capped off by a blinding and impactful headlining set from Nine Inch Nails. About an hour before showtime, the festival revealed Trent and the boys would be pulling double duty, filling in for a Covid-stricken Strokes on the second night of the fest; and they sure gave folx a reason to return Before NIN displayed their aggressive industrial flex, sets from HAIM, Avril Lavigne, Paris Texas, The Struts, Grandson, Paris Jackson, Pom Pom Squad and Mob Rich showed off a spectrum of sounds and performative flair, and Emily Gardner captured it all across the three main stages.
