Momma rev up the sentiment with an alt-rock yearning on ‘Lucky’

Don’t fuck this up: You have four chances to see Momma perform live around New England this summer. The buzzy Brooklyn alt-rock band play a trio of regional shows with Snail Mail — August 12 at Fete Music Hall in Providence; August 13 at Burlington’s Higher Ground; and August 16 at Toad’s Place in New Haven — before headlining Brighton Music Hall in Allston on September 12. All of those gigs happen after the July 1 Polyvinyl release of Momma’s new album Household Name, and that LP title might manifest into something quite real.

We’ve already hyped their tour, we’ve already hyped February’s roaring “Rockstar”, and now we’re here today (May 25) bumping “Lucky”, a beautifully yearning engine-purr of a tune from the band led by singers/guitarists Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten. It arrives with a video directed by Emma Penrose and Zack Shorrosh.

“I wrote it after my significant other and I had to spend an unknown amount of time apart from each other on opposite sides of the country,” says Friedman. “I wanted it to feel anthemic, like a sappy and sentimental love song, but I still wanted to speak on how exciting it feels to know you found true treasure with someone you are in love with.”

Adds Penrose: “We didn’t want to get too cheesy and literal, so Etta suggested some ideas from the Green Day ‘Walking Contradiction’ video as well as the fun and etherealness of certain beabadoobee videos,” explains director Penrose. “In the end, we feel like the video displays how much fun it was to film — everyone involved was a friend of either Zack & Emma’s or Etta & Allegra’s, so the project feels very personal and lighthearted.”

We all should feel so “Lucky.”
