Watch the red-band trailer for Jerrod Carmichael’s ‘On the Count of Three’

Before we get to the meat of this post about the trailer for On the Count of Three, we’ll just share the brief note that Annapurna Pictures and United Artists provided to go along with it, for pretty self-explanatory reasons:

TRIGGER WARNING: This trailer contains subject matter related to mental health and suicide. If you or a loved one is in crisis, please reach out to National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK or the Crisis Text Line (Text TALK to 741741) to talk to someone who can help.

Now, on to the matter at hand: Jerrod Carmichael’s On The Count of Three was one of the best movies we saw at Sundance 2021 (you know, the all-digital one that went surprisingly well), and we’re happy that it’s finally getting a release. This is one of the best re-formulations of the Buddy Comedy that we’ve seen in recent years, and despite that warning above, it’s pretty life-affirming and funny (with a hefty dose of darkness also because… well, just read the damn trigger warning). Annapurna and UA dropped the red-band trailer earlier on Wednesday morning, and it’s a pretty good preview of what’s to come without spoiling everything that you’ll laugh at.

Peep it (though you’ll have to click through because it’s age-restricted):

Here’s an understandably hyper-short synopsis:

“From Annapurna Pictures (‘Spring Breakers,’ ‘Sorry to Bother You,’ ‘Booksmart’) and Orion Pictures, Jerrod Carmichael makes his directorial debut and stars in ‘On the Count of Three,’ a darkly comic feature about two best friends, Val (Carmichael) and Kevin (Christopher Abbott), on the last day of their lives.”

On the Count of Three hits theaters and digital on May 13. Get ready for that Papa Roach revival, because it’s gonna happen.
