Blast off with Pixar and the brand new ‘Lightyear’ trailer

Lightyear
Disney/Pixar

Summer movie season kicks off in right about two weeks’ time and, like in recent years, a Disney movie will be kicking it off. That means we’ll be getting a deluge of new trailers for the House of Mouse’s upcoming offerings, which began in earnest on Monday when the Thor: Love and Thunder preview finally came around. Now it’s Lightyear’s turn, and being the sole Pixar offering for this calendar year (unless they’ve added another Cars sequel that they haven’t told anybody about) it’s got some big shoes to fill. Disney dropped the new trailer earlier on Thursday, and it looks like you’d probably expect it would for a “hard” sci-fi version of… Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.

Peep it:

Here’s a synopsis that contains some pretty troublesome and confusing verbiage — we’ve seen comments from so many people wondering if this is in canon in the Toy Story universe (as in “Andy’s playing with a toy based on a real dude who went to space”) or if it’s just an in-universe movie that would go on to inspire said toy — but, whatever, it’s still a Buzz Lightyear movie:

“The definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy, ‘Lightyear’ follows the legendary Space Ranger after he’s marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew. As Buzz tries to find a way back home through space and time, he’s joined by a group of ambitious recruits and his charming robot companion cat, Sox. Complicating matters and threatening the mission is the arrival of Zurg, an imposing presence with an army of ruthless robots and a mysterious agenda.”

Lightyear hits theaters on June 17. Given that this one isn’t an original Pixar project, you can bet your bottom dollar they’re not gonna send this one to Disney+.
