Editor’s Note: Welcome to V3 Weekend, a new Vanyaland series where we help you sort out your weekend entertainment with curated selections and recommendations across our three pillars of Music, Comedy, and Film/TV. It’s what you should know about, where you need to be, and where you’ll be going, with us riding shotgun along the way.
Music: illuminati hotties, with Fenne Lily and Pom Pom Squad, at The Sinclair
Can we get a “MMMOOOAAAAAYAYA” in the chat? Hells yeah we can, and tonight we’ll take that vibe through the snowstorm and freezing New England temps over to The Sinclair in Cambridge, where illuminati hotties headline one of the more inspired touring packages of the new year, bringing Fenne Lily and Pom Pom Squad along for the ride. We got hyped for this tour back when it was announced in September, and all things considered, we’re just happy it wasn’t postponed or cancelled or placed into that new category where we just forget things were ever announced in the first place. We told you then to start practicing how to scream “MMMOOOAAAAAYAYA”, and now instead of yelling it at unsuspecting small children, you can do it with Sarah Tudzin within the frigid confines of Harvard Square in February. That alone feels worth the price of admission.
Comedy: Jim Jefferies at The Wang
As outlined in Monday’s Mic’d Up, there’s a ton of great stand-up options around town this weekend (Russell Peters, Valerie Tosi, Dan Crohn), but things feel headlined a bit by Jim Jefferies returning to Boston to slay The Boch Center’s Wang Theatre on Saturday (February 26), the latest stop on his Moist Tour. And the love is mutual. “Looking at the calendar, the Boston date is definitely one that pops out at me,” the Australian comic tells Vanyaland’s Jason Greenough. “I can’t wait to do this one. I’ve done New Year’s Eve in Boston, and shot a few specials there. I’m well-versed in Boston, and I like the people, because they seem to be my kind of people. They’re a little bit left, a little bit right, and I like that. I consider myself to be someone in the middle who really couldn’t give two fucks, as well.”
Film/TV: Summer ’03 on Amazon Prime
There’s a fun meme making the rounds that points out the difference between Dazed & Confused’s release date of 1993 and the year it takes place (1976) is the equivalent of a film today throwing it back 17 years to 2005. So once you remove your old-ass Xennial head from the toilet, it’s clear that mid-aughts nostalgia is back in a big way, and not just for indie sleaze, gas prices, and post-punk revivalists. Rebecca Gleason’s 2018 film Summer ’03, currently streaming on Amazon Prime, takes us back to that post-9/11 time, before social media ruined all our lives and we communicated with each other in person, chronicling a family thrown into chaos after their dying grandmother spills the tea and reveals an array of family secrets. The coming-of-age dramedy centers on 16-year-old Jamie (a wonderfully relatable Joey King), who navigates her own personal life alongside the family’s unraveling. It’s quirky and engaging enough to see if your old Friendster log-in still works.
