Divine Sweater battle anxiety in the ‘What if They Find Me Out?’ video

The music video for “What if They Find Me Out?” puts the “sweat” in Divine Sweater.

The alluring baseline powering the Boston band’s tune from 2021 practically begs its listeners to groove. An accompanying run-of-the-mill vid just wasn’t going to cut it. Only a get-on-your-feet workout tape would make the grade — or least a parody of one.

Divine Sweater today (February 23) released their visual for “What if They Find Me Out?”, a gyrating homage to retro exercise routines and all the neon, geometric-patterned “fashion” that follows. Through synchronized stretching, spandex, and air-sax solos, the group sweats through a theme of insecurity, as the video illustrates the mental gymnastics of duking it out with anxiety and self-doubt.

“Lyrically, I drew inspiration from being bullied in school, creating a narrator simultaneously paralyzed by and trying to downplay social anxiety,” vocalist Meghan Kelleher shares.

“They flip me upside-down / Shake all my spare change out / What do I tell myself now?” she sings on the chorus. Kelleher quickly answers her own question by walloping the band’s visual representation of insecurity (in this case, bassist Alex Goldberg) right in the kisser with a pink boxing glove.

It’s a friendly reminder that when your mind fabricates blows to your confidence, you’re allowed to swing right back. Divine Sweater, 1; their brains’ bullshit, 0.
