Editor’s Note: Even in the dead of winter, there is never a shortage of comedy shows to check out around Boston, as homegrown talent, national headliners, and open mics galore highlight the calendar. As live entertainment slowly makes its way back into our social lives — mask up! stay safe! — we always want to make sure you know about cool stuff going on in the world of comedy. Enter Mic’d Up, our ongoing weekly series that details the best live comedy shows to consider as you head out and about. Below find our rundown for this week, through Sunday (January 16).
Comedy on Draft at Sam Adams Taproom
Two of Boston’s best exports are joined together for an unmatched night of drafts and laughs. Join Emma Willmann, Corey Rodrigues, Will Noonan, Chris Tabb, Kathe Farris and Graig Murphy for this month’s slate of freshly tapped comedy, and throw back some suds if you feel the need. Regardless of how you choose to spend the night, just remember that this show is always a rad choice… or whatever the Sammy slogan says.
Thursday, January 13 :: 8 p.m. :: Sam Adams Taproom, 60 State St. in Boston, MA :: Tickets are $15
Greg Fitzsimmons at Laugh Boston
Beginning in the trenches of the comedy boom of the ’80s in Boston, the storytelling and observational precision of Greg Fitzsimmons is a gift that just keeps on giving to this day. No topic left off-limits, no side-splitting detail left unshared, and we get to see it unfold up close and personal in the Seaport this week. His brand of comedy hasn’t changed very much over the years, but the level at which the Boston University alum delivers has only gotten more intricate and enticing, and with all that is currently going on in the world, it’ll be nice to have a genuine gut laugh at the hands of one of the best in the game for a bit.
Thursday, January 13 to Saturday, January 15 :: Thursday at 8 p.m.; Friday at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. :: Laugh Boston, 425 Summer St. in Boston :: Tickets are $29
Dave Attell at The Wilbur Theatre
Whether it’s voice acting, bumpin’ mics with Jeff Ross, or taking the stage as the lone wolf comedy machine he’s proven himself to be over the years, Dave Attell can do it all. As a living legend of the craft, Attell’s perspective and “every man” delivery have been all too relatable over the course of his career, and thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be changing any time soon. While we may not know what this new arsenal of material will bring to Attell’s repertoire quite yet, what is safe to assume is that it’s going to be cutting, honest, and pleasantly blunt.
Friday, January 14 :: 7 p.m. :: The Wilbur Theatre, 246 Tremont St. in Boston :: Tickets are $37
Comedy Night at Hotel Vernon
If Hotel Vernon’s unofficial landmark status in the arts scene isn’t enough to get you out for a night of comedy for the hot price of $5 at the door, then perhaps the $1 drafts will help. Regardless of what entices you to make your way to this show, join Shaun Connolly, Mairéad Dickinson, Bill James and more for an all-star caliber night of stand-up. That should definitely do the trick.
Friday, January 14 :: 8 p.m. :: Hotel Vernon, 16 Kelley Sq. in Worcester, MA :: Admission is $5 at the door
Mendoza Line Comedy at The Dugout Cafe
While the show’s namesake may cheekily sell itself short, this ever-changing lineup of the city’s best comedy voices hits well above average week after week. From the host to the smattering of comics that make their way to Commonwealth Avenue every Saturday, this show throws nothing but the highest quality gas at an unbeatable price. If you’re looking for a cozy spot to hang out, have more than a few laughs, and support local artists, this show is an absolute can of corn.
Saturday, January 15 :: 9 p.m. :: The Dugout Cafe, 722 Commonwealth Ave. in Boston, MA :: Tickets are $10
