Editor’s Note: Usually, the best part about the comedy scene blossoming in and around Boston this time of year is that there is never a shortage of shows to check out, as homegrown talent, national headliners, and open mics galore make their way through and around the area. But this year just feels different, as live entertainment is slowly making its way back into our social calendar. We always want to make sure you know about cool stuff going on in the world of comedy, so check back each week for our ongoing Mic’d Up series, detailing the best live comedy shows to consider as you head back out. Below find our rundown for this week, through Sunday (December 19).
Orlando Baxter at Giggles Comedy Club
It’s not very often we get to see Orlando Baxter at the helm for a show on Route 1, but any opportunity is an exciting one indeed. Catch one of Boston’s best in the headlining slot this weekend alongside Steve Bjork and Johnny Pizzi for a trifecta of hilarity. Comedy and pizza — can you really get any better?
Friday, December 17 and Saturday, December 18 at 8:30 p.m. :: Giggles Comedy Club, 517 Broadway in Saugus, MA :: Tickets are $25
Liam McGurk at The Comedy Attic
Observational comedy? Check. Stoner humor? Check. Hot topic political takes? Check. Whatever angle you’re looking for in a comedy show, there’s a good chance Liam McGurk will at least touch on it. As one of the city’s most versatile comedy voices, McGurk is sure to deliver one hell of a set, regardless of what he’s talking about on any given night.
Friday, December 17 and Saturday, December 18 :: 8 p.m. both shows :: The Comedy Attic, 257 Park Ave. in Worcester :: Tickets are $20
Eugene Mirman & Friends at City Winery
It’s always a treat when Eugene Mirman makes his way to the city, and the holiday show lineup he’s curated for this go-around is no exception. Join the Bob’s Burgers star, as well as Maeve Higgins, Derrick Brown, Tanya Donelly and possibly some surprise guests for a night of holiday hilarity that is a near guarantee to keep us laughing for quite awhile.
EUGENE MIRMAN & FRIENDS HOLIDAY SHOW: Saturday, December 18 :: 8 p.m. :: City Winery, 80 Beverly St. in Boston, MA :: :: Tickets are $30 to $50
Gareth Reynolds at The Crystal Ballroom
If you scrolled by this show listing and thought “Hmm, maybe I should check that out,” the answer is yes. Yes you should. As one of the strongest all-around comics on the grind today, the Emerson alum brings his unapologetically blunt (and generally pretty accurate) perspective on pretty much everything to Somerville for an intimate show that is bound to be an absolute gem of a gathering.
GARETH REYNOLDS: Sunday, December 19 :: 7 p.m. :: The Crystal Ballroom at Somerville Theatre, 55 Davis Square in Somerville :: Tickets are $27
