They kept us entertained during lockdown, now they want to make us dance. This natural progression could only come from Deco, the London alt-pop alchemists whose musical mashups — like Oasis’ “Wonderwall” over Bronski Beat’s “Smalltown Boy,” and Arctic Monkeys’ “I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor” over Yazoo’s “Situation” — racked up millions of online views and became an essential part of our Quarantainment coverage.
Now Max Kendall and crew are doing the mashing on their own terms, at least half-way, taking The Verve’s forever unfuckwithable indie anthem “Bitter Sweet Symphony” and applying to it their own electronic-pop shine that we first caught an aural glimpse of with their 2020 EP Real Life. Someone go wake up Allen Klein for the last time.
Deco’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony” is officially out today (December 3), and it drops a stylish synth-pop beat on the Britpop classic all while marking Deco’s debut with Ultra Records. Not a bad look.
“2021 has been a crazy year for us, with the social media buzz, extensive songwriting and touring since things re-opened in the summer,” says Kendall. “We’re so excited to put out our first new music in over a year, and our first track released with Ultra Records. ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ is an undeniable classic that reminds us of growing up, so we hope everyone enjoys our ’80s-tinged, synth-pop take on it!”
