Sub Pop has absolutely crushed it in 2019, with banner releases from Orville Peck, Tacocat, Julien Baker, Cartel Madras, Yuno and others showcasing the legendary label as an unwavering force in modern music. But outside of Sir Peck teaching the indie kids how to line dance, the most notable release to emerge from Sub Pop this year has been Marika Hackman’s stunning LP Any Human Friend, highlighted by May’s Song of the Year contender “i’m not where you are”. The British singer-songwriter says the track, which borders a fine line between gritty alt-pop and weathered modern rock, “is about breaking up with people, or self-sabotaging relationships, that feeling of not trusting ones emotions because you can’t seem to get to the same place as the other person.” And that’s about as 2019 as it gets. We’re stoked Hackman is finally playing Boston tonight (October 18), with a late show at Great Scott in Allston. Hit up the club, and hear one of the year’s best — in the album, song, and performer category.
