Listen to Illuminati Hotties cover a Whitney Houston classic

With the passing of Labor Day, it feels like a new season is upon us. So what better way to usher in the closing quarter of 2019 with a new cover that breathes new life into an ’80s classic?

It comes from Los Angeles indie-pop project Illuminati Hotties, and the cover in question is Whitney Houston’s immortal 1987 pop hit “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” But this is no dance jam set for New Year’s Eve parties — unless, of course, you’re spending New Year’s Eve alone.

“’I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ is a perfect song,” says Illuminati Hotties’ Sarah Tudzin, via Brooklyn Vegan. “The sentiment behind it is so forlorn, while the track behind it rages on in ’80s exuberance in such a way that only a power-diva like Whitney Houston could pull off. It’s a song that has always fascinated me, so I started covering it live from the angle of heartbreak that is illustrated by the lyrics, and ultimately decided to record it to tape and slow it down even further.”

We’re glad this exists.

We all certainly need it, since we’re all pretty much dancing alone as the year comes to a close.
