The Boston-based comedian heads to Seattle with his newest project in hand
It’s been just about a year since Andrew Mayer really began to dig into bringing the narrative for his new one-man show to life, and now after hurdling his biggest roadblock, which he admits was himself, the bespectacled stand-up vet has his sights set west.
Bringing his newest project, Have Fun, Be Yourself, across the country to Seattle’s Pocket Theater on Saturday (August 17), Mayer is looking forward to not only bringing the show to a crowd outside of Boston, but he’s also excited to see how the more personal and autobiographical approach he’s taken in this new show will connect with the crowd in the Emerald City.
“I think it’s going to be fun,” Mayer tells Vanyaland. “It’s a little bit different than the shows I’ve done before, where it’s not quite straight stand-up, but I still think it has a lot of jokes in it, and it’s quite funny, but there’s definitely an element to it that makes it a lot more personal than the material I’ve done before.”

While he’s no stranger to the 206, having participated in the Seattle International Comedy Competition in 2017 and having grown a liking to performing in the Pacific Northwest in general, Mayer is still anticipating the feeling to be a bit different from his usual stomping grounds in Boston, but there’s no real added pressure to make sure he’s “on” for a crowd away from home.
“It’ll be different for sure, but I don’t know if there’s any more or less pressure,” says Mayer. “The pressure really is hoping that people will come to see it.”
Aside from bringing the project to an optimum setting for a show of this type, Mayer may not be feeling any significant pressure going into this performance, but he does hope that people not only show up to watch the performance, but that they also enjoy it and relate to the material the same way a Boston crowd that’s known Mayer for many years might.
“I feel like it’s a great setting to do this show in a black box theater, since I haven’t done it in one yet, but I hope people come and they enjoy it,” says Mayer. “At home, I feel like a lot of people that have come out to see the show have also seen more of my stand-up and know a bit more of my own story, so they relate to it, but it’ll be a good test of where the show is if total strangers also can relate to things I say.”
