The new ‘Gemini Man’ trailer has Will Smith seeing double

Since it’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood week, studios are, of course, flooding the zone with trailers for their adult-oriented upcoming slate. Earlier on Thursday, we reported on that unexciting Zombieland trailer that dropped, and now we’re going to talk about Gemini Man, that ridiculous-looking Ang Lee movie that should have probably been directed by John Woo before the Hollywood system totally rejected him for whatever colossally stupid reason.

You know, the one starring Will Smith as an older assassin who’s being hunted by a younger version of himself (Will Smith). It looks kind of entertaining in a charming “you’re going to love getting stoned to this on HBO in six months” way, and this new trailer, which drops a whole lot of the po-facedness of the first trailer (we hope whoever decided on slow, sad vocoder covers of pop songs to be the standard accompaniment to all action movie trailers is enjoying the seventh circle of hell right now) in favor of action and younger Smith’s CGI tears. We’re okay with that.

Here’s the trailer:

So, obviously, this cost a whole lot of money, and to be honest, it really shouldn’t have. Smith’s got a decent on-screen rapport with his son, Jaden (After Earth isn’t that bad), and this feels like it might break the digitally de-aged camel’s back. Remember, this tech has only been used for good in a few recent movies — most of them Marvel — and everything from Tron: Legacy to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has failed at utilizing it properly. We’re hoping Lee’s film is a bit different, and the dude is definitely a master at using CGI to good ends, but we’re still a little skeptical about this one.

Here’s a brief synopsis:

‘Gemini Man’ is an innovative action-thriller starring Will Smith as Henry Brogan, an elite assassin, who is suddenly targeted and pursued by a mysterious young operative that seemingly can predict his every move.

Gemini Man hits theaters on October 11.
