Here are your 2019 Academy Award nominees

Abandon all hope, ye who enter here

Roma

Get your conspiracy theories ready, folks: it’s Academy Awards time. The nominees for the 91st installment of the Awards show were announced on Tuesday morning via livestream, and boy, are they a pretty weird group of nominees. Netflix’s Roma and Focus Features’ The Favourite led the pack with ten nominations each, closely followed by Annapurna’s Vice and Warner Bros.’ A Star is Born with eight. This year’s Oscar villains are well-represented in the Best Picture category as most expected them to be, with the surprisingly not-as-successful-as-you-might-expect Green Book and the made-lots-of-money-but-morally-bankrupt Bohemian Rhapsody taking their positions atop the category following their respective wins at the Golden Globes.

In terms of snubs, well, take your pick: Ethan Hawke, he of First Reformed fame, wasn’t nominated for Best Actor, in an award that all but seems fated to go to Rami Malek at this point, and the Mr. Rogers documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor, a financial and critical success was ignored by the Academy as well. In terms of surprises, Pawel Pawlikowski receiving a Best Director nod for Cold War over Green Book director Peter Farrelly is both good news and a cautionary tale for young directors who think it’s funny to flash their penises at young women, and Black Panther got nominated for Best Picture, which is good for nerds like us and, more importantly, ABC’s parent company.

For those disappointed with the nominees: remember, the only Academy Awards that matter are the ones you give out in your head after a long and fun year of moviegoing, and the only reason this goddamn awards show bullshit exists in the first place is to give gambling addicts something to do between the Super Bowl and March Madness. Speaking of which, we’ll have our Oscar gambling odds analysis for you closer to the show date, but be warned: it’s anybody’s race this year.
