Last time we caught up with Ronan, the Boston duo of Craig Ronan and Abel Guler were waving “New Flags” that helped usher in a new era of the city’s electronic-pop sound. The music of Ronan is darkly atmospheric and spectral, and their latest track “Beneath The Ice” pulsates within underground rhythms as its video flashes the bright lights one might see in their final moments. The haunting clip was filmed at Jon Bon Jovi’s former penthouse in New York City, directed by frequent collaborator Sam Hamad (who once created intriguing pop sounds here in town with Leisure a few years ago), and stars Farrell Mason Brown of New York City’s Movement Innocence dance company. “The song itself, the momentum and release, reminded me of the Phil Collins track ‘In the Air Tonight’ so when I started doing vocal takes I was thinking about that false rumor about how that song was about him letting his friend drown,” Craig Ronan tells Vanyaland. “So I went into that world. Sometimes I’m playing the role of potential rescuer and sometimes that of victim.” Catch Ronan live on December 1 at Michael’s in Somerville, and spend the time between now and then dancing under the brightest of mortal light via “Beneath The Ice” below.
