Last time we caught up with Ella Vos, the vocalist and songwriter was unfurling her delicate fury on breakout 2017 LP Words I Never Said in advance of a live appearance in Cambridge. That was March, and this week Vos returns with a hauntingly divine new song called “Cast Away”, part of a new project she wrote while in treatment for lymphoma. Vos self-directed the video for the single, and that can be viewed below. “I envisioned this music video almost immediately after I wrote the song,” Vos says. “I wanted to depict myself stranded in L.A. — my desert island — walking everywhere but going nowhere. Which is how I felt when I wrote this song. Each day felt like a repeat of the day before, and I was dragging myself along through the exhaustion and fatigue. The visual for the video was so clear in my head, it made sense to self-direct which was an amazing experience.” As usual, there are many layers to Vos’ exploration of her pop-weary sound and vocal delivery, and “Cast Away” is another sterling turn from one of the more earnest songwriters in the game today.
