Julia Holter knows how to weave a storyteller’s emotion into her music. So as the Los Angeles singer-songwriter readies her new album Aviary for October 26 release via Domino, it’s only fitting that she unveils a beautifully haunting visual for her expansive new song, “Words I Heard”. The video is directed by Holter’s frequent collaborator Dicky Bahto, who used a quote from Lebanese-American writer Etel Adnan as a starting point, bringing her composition to visual life. “When Julia told me that the title of her album was inspired by Etel Adnan, one of my favorite writers, I felt that I had to make a film for one of the songs on Mount Tamalpais, a recurring subject in both Adnan’s visual art and her writing,” Bahto says. “I filmed on a few hikes down the Dipsea trail, and in the last section of the song combine this with footage made during the studio sessions of the album.” Holter sets off on a North American tour in early 2019, and she lands at Brighton Music Hall in Allston on February 23.
