Liz Phair played a sold-out Royale last night (October 8), and somehow made the entire thing even cooler than we all figured it would be.

That’s because she was joined on stage by Juliana Hatfield and Sadie Dupuis in covering Olivia Newton-John’s 1975 country-pop song “Please Mr Please.” Dupuis was on hand because her band, Speedy Ortiz, opened the show, and Hatfield was invited in as a “special guest.”

Of course, Hatfield is no stranger to Olivia Newton-John, having released a full covers album titled Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John back in April (read our extended interview with her here). But Hatfield was a stranger to Phair, and vice versa, relatively speaking.

“The truth is, this is the first night Juliana and I ever met,” Phair tweeted after the show. “The old industry separated female artists, almost pitted them against each other in the press. Now we’re sewing up the gaps. I love you @julianahatfield thank you so much.”

Hatfield replied by tweeting: “i love you, too, liz! it was a dream to sing with you!”
