Studio 52 Spotlight: I Wish I Could Skateboard
What Studio 52 Says: After leaving their hometown of Tyler, Texas for new job opportunities, I Wish I Could Skateboard (IWICS) vocalist/guitarist Patrick McPherson and bassist Hannah Fletcher planted themselves in Boston but continued to nurture their spirited emo rock in their new home. Recruiting his twin brother Tim and friend Greg Bright to help them on stage, McPherson mentions they still collaborate with original guitarist James Alvarado, who is making the trip up to Boston for their next string of shows. “It’s definitely not a normal setup for a band,” McPherson tells Studio 52. “We do our best to make it work because we like the songs and the band and we didn’t want to let it die.” Yesterday saw the release of their newest single, “8AM”, recorded in their home in Somerville. The two-and-half-minute track is a lethargic unwinding of twinkling guitar riffs layered on a deliberate bass rhythm coupled with the solid drum beats of live drummer Bright. With the writing for their new album already underway, we’re extremely intrigued what the unorthodox band structure will release in the coming months. Their passion for the project is absolutely commendable and we’re excited for the eventual release. IWICS gear up for a tour down the East Coast starting tonight (August 31) and running through September when they return to the Boston area for a show at ONCE Somerville on September 20. Tonight’s kickoff show is at The Lilypad in Inman Square in Cambridge with Banana, Doom Service, and Sleepy Monks. — Andrew Maroney, Studio 52
