It’s been a bit since we saw any new footage from Damien Chazelle’s Neil Armstrong biopic First Man, which stars Ryan Gosling as the famed astronaut, but don’t worry: Universal hasn’t forgotten about it. Well, that was the truth regardless of any radio silence, given that they’re hoping this thing wins a shitload of Oscars, but the studio dropped a new trailer today that might make your eyes — and your heart — melt. You’re going to want to see this in IMAX (or, if you’re a purist like we are, 70mm film) when it hits theaters later in the fall.
Don’t just take our word for it, though. Take a look:
Yes, this is a movie that will probably make both you and your dad cry at some point. Consider it the bonding experience that you always hoped fishing would be.
Here’s a brief synopsis, not like you really need it:
“On the heels of their six-time Academy Award-winning smash, ‘La La Land,’ Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling reteam for Universal Pictures’ ‘First Man,’ the riveting story of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. A visceral, first-person account, based on the book by James R. Hansen, the movie will explore the sacrifices and the cost—on Armstrong and on the nation—of one of the most dangerous missions in history.”
First Man will have its premiere on Wednesday at the Venice Film Festival, so expect the first reactions to hit soon. It’ll also be playing at TIFF next month, where we’ll definitely be checking it out even if it means we have to sell our souls to get a seat in that theater. Expect a review from the there. For everybody else, First Man will hit theaters on October 12.
