‘Outlaw King’ Trailer: Chris Pine is Robert the Bruce

Outlaw King

Over the last 10 years, we’ve seen Chris Pine fill some pretty big shoes: Captain Kirk’s the most obvious, but don’t forget that our dude also played Jack Ryan (not well, though) and helped to bring Steve Trevor to the big screen in Wonder Woman last year. Now, he’s re-teaming with his Hell or High Water director David Mackenzie to walk all over Angus MacFadyen’s territory and to bring the “untold story” of King of Scots Robert the Bruce to the big screen (or, well, Netflix, which is putting this on some movie screens for Awards Season). You think they might have found a better title than Outlaw King, but who knows how these choices get made.

You’re probably wondering how Pine handles the accent from this trailer, and we’ll say this: He does better than we thought he would. But you can take a look for yourself:

It doesn’t look bad, but we’re kind of stunned at how generic everything looks. Didn’t we already go this route for two different King Arthur movies, and didn’t both of those fail? Either way, we’ll watch it, but it may suffer the same fate that so many Netflix movies have succumbed to: We’ll check Twitter ten minutes in and never look back.

Here’s a synopsis:

“The untold, true story of Robert the Bruce who transforms from defeated nobleman to outlaw hero during the oppressive occupation of medieval Scotland by Edward I of England. Despite grave consequences, Robert seizes the Scottish crown and rallies an impassioned group of men to fight back against the mighty army of the tyrannical King and his volatile son, the Prince of Wales. Filmed in Scotland, ‘Outlaw King’ reunites director David Mackenzie (‘Hell or High Water’) with star Chris Pine alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Florence Pugh and Billy Howle.”

Outlaw King hits select theaters and arrives on Netflix on November 9, but it’ll have its world premiere as the TIFF opening night film. We’ll hopefully have a review of it for you around then.
