Natalie Shay is ready to let her lover down slowly. For everyone else, we’re treated to quite the opposite approach. The 19-year-old from London is back with a visual for her latest single, “Perfume,” and while the song thematically explores a crossroads in a relationship and the choices one must make to move on, it also feels like the start of something special. “Perfume” is the follow-up to Shay’s more driving, guitar-pop track “This Feeling”, and it stirs into bubblegum ’80s electronic-pop territory that both colors and emboldens the message. The result is awfully sweet — for the rest of us, at least. “I love how this track is so different from my others but is very self contained,” says Shay, a classically trained guitarist since the age of 5 and graduate of the famed BRIT School. “I especially loved the use of using modular synths and other productional techniques to create a sound which is a mix of my live, real-instrument sound and and a new productional identity.” It all adds up to Shay moving on — from a stale relationship and into our fresh playlists.
