It wasn't too long ago that the Friday night slate at Boston Calling was a mere warm-up for the day-long weekend festivities that defined the franchise. These days at Harvard Athletic Complex, Friday is just as vital as Saturday and Sunday, and like Chance The Rapper last year, yesterday (May 25) proved the point further. The Killers held court as proper headliners (with a power move of opening with "Mr. Brightside," to the delight of tens of thousands), but the rest of the day and evening was just as killer: The National, Noname, Perfume Genius, Maggie Rogers, Big Thief, and Portugal. The Man all served up enjoyable sets across the fest's main Red and Blue stages. Vanyaland's Matthew Shelter was bouncing back and forth between the two, and you can scan through his full Day 1 gallery below.
